When you cast this spell you transform and are effectively replaced by a monster of your choice of a challenge rating equal to your HD or your caster level -3 (whichever is lower) and cannot have the incorporeal or swarm subtype. It is unexceptional for its type. You take all the statistics, abilities, and traits of the monster in question, but retain your alignment, personality and goals, and effective HD. Worn magic items change to your new form if they have the body slots for them, otherwise they are absorbed or fall on the ground at your feet.
You gain spell-like abilities of a creature but you must pay for expensive material or XP components for any spell-like abilities, unlike normal. If the new form has spellcasting (such as a solar), you must rest for 8 hours before you gain access to their spellcasting.
When the monster is killed, the spell ends and you appear in the monster's space with the same lethal, nonlethal, ability damage, and status effects in place on the monster. If this means that the monster was slain and the monster had an equal or greater number of hit points as you, you may be dead when you return to normal.
If prepared in a spell slot one level higher, this becomes Polymorph Other and it gains the range of Touch, with a Fortitude save (harmless). Creatures are limited by your caster level or the target's HD, whichever is lower.
