Toon[edit]

A template-like race (akin to Dragonborn), toons are living animations come to life and somehow present within 3D space. They display strange and anomalous properties which often render them very durable.

No one is certain how the toons first appeared. They are thought to be an artificial creation by some mad bard or wizard, literally drawn up with magic and artistic merit. Soon the strange magical inks which formed the creatures were found elsewhere, spawning toons near and far. Others think they are extraplanar origins, appearing from an alternate dimension where 2D is the norm and 3D is an aberration. Whatever the case, the presence of toons is often one where hijinks follow.

Personality[edit]

It seems to be the natural state of the toon of take all things, including behavior, to their illogical extremes or to the point of absurdity. In fact, the quest of absurdity (and subsequently humor) seems to be a main driving force, for toons have a natural good sense of humor and appreciate witnessing or being the cause of comedic happenstance. As a result many are soon as jokers and jesters, and many also naturally adopt these roles to fit into what they do best. Supposedly the ancient toons of old who were closer to the ur-ink were this out of requirement, for the ancient toons were invulnerable to harm unless placed in a serious situation. If the ancient toon was forced to take things seriously, they also became vulnerable. Of course, modern toons lack this invulnerability and mostly carry on the behavior out of tradition.

Physical Description[edit]

While toons as a race do breed true, toons are typically not formed naturally. By performing the Ritual of Animation, a normal creature elects to transform their bodies into that of a toon. Toons appear to be stylized 2D versions of the original characters, though regardless of what angle one looks at the toon from they never show their edge, only a drawn image of the appropriate angle. As a drawing, they have outlines, and often simple or flat shading, impossible biology and geometry such as eyes that are far too big for their head or limbs which cannot host any sane or normal bone structure. Their bodies often distort and change as well in movement, as all actions are exaggerated.

As a toon, they are technically immortal until slain, or until they choose to sleep and fade away into obscurity.

Relations[edit]

Races which possess a sense of humor can often find kinship in toon-kind, and even more when they are generated from members of their own. Thus gnomes, halflings, fey, and humans are common contestants. Elves may take things too long term and seriously, while orcs and dwarves are often far too gruff to consider becoming or allying themselves with a toon.

Alignment[edit]

Toons are the alignment of their original creature, but often become more chaotic during the process.

Lands[edit]

Toon lands are said to exist in a far off demiplane, the possible origin of toon kind. However, as a general rule toons are not common enough to have formed a land of their own.

Religion[edit]

Toons do not follow a religion of their own, except for the religions they bring with them from their previous lives.

Language[edit]

Toons speak the language of their base race.

Names[edit]

Toons possess the names of their base race.

Racial Traits[edit]

Toons, like Dragonborn, is a sort-of template sort-of race. While it is presented as a race, it is applied similar to a template to a pre-existing race which replaces most of the original race traits.

  • -2 to any attribute, +2 Charisma: Toons are often charismatic and entertaining, though the process of becoming a toon may lead them to become deficient in other random areas. Rarely, some have no changes to ability scores by canceling the +2 Charisma with -2 Charisma.
  • Aberration: Toon technically fall under aberrations, as they hardly normal in this world at all. They retain any subtypes of their base race.
  • Medium: As a Medium creature, a toon has no special bonuses or penalties due to its size.
  • Toon base land speed is feet. Most are medium, but toons retain the size and movement options of their base race, though they lose any other augmentations to their movement (such as the dwarven ability to move in heavy armor without slowing down).
  • Darkvision: A toon can see in the dark up to 60 feet. Darkvision is black and white only, but it is otherwise like normal sight, and a toon can function just fine with no light at all.
  • Drawing Style (Ex): Toons come in several drawing styles, from serious looking realism to super deformed comedic moeblobs. Choose one of the drawing styles below as your default drawing style, gaining the listed benefits. However, you can alter your drawing style as a swift action to any other drawing style, and can stay in an alternative drawing style for up to 2 rounds/HD each day. Dropping back to your default drawing style is a free action on your turn only, and the time used need not be contiguous.
Chibi: The toon is always under the effect of big head mode.
Cute: The toon gains the adorable trait, which stacks with the actual trait.
Gross: The toon is drawn in great detail to the point of unnerving others. Creatures attacking you in melee must make a Will save (DC 10 + 1/2 HD + your highest mental ability modifier) or become disgusted and take a -4 morale penalty on melee attacks against you until out of your sight for 1 minute. A creature who successfully saves is immune to your gross effect for 24 hours. Some creatures, such as disgusting otyughs or mindless creatures, may simply be immune. You take a -4 penalty on Diplomacy checks.
Heroic: The toon is drawn as a hero, or an inspiring figure. They are always under the effect of ell's dramatic action. Whenever they roll a natural 20 (regardless if it is an attack, skill, or save) during a stressful situation such as battle, they gain a +2 morale bonus to the roll they succeeded on (attack, skills, or saves) for 1 minute.
Realistic: The toon almost looks normal, giving no penalties to disguise as a normal member of their race, and may be treated as a member of their original race whenever beneficial (such as counting as a human if struck with an aberration bane weapon).
  • Exaggerated Proportions (Ex): Your exaggerated proportions give you an amount of flexibility with your actual size. If you are Medium or larger, you gain slight build. If you are Small or smaller, you gain powerful build. Your exaggerated expressions are good at getting across your point, but also good for others to figure out your intent. Creatures gain a +4 bonus on Sense Motive checks against you.
  • Hammerspace (Su): You wield the power of hammerspace, effectively giving you the benefits of a handy haversack you have on your person at all times, pulling items out of pockets, your mouth, or even thin air. The hammerspace has a capacity of 50 lbs (and 5 cu feet) per HD you possess, though the contents weight nothing while hidden. The hammerspace shuts down in extradimensional spaces, and have no danger of exploding or ripping a hole to the astral plane. Living creatures cannot be stored in hammerspace, though non-living creatures can as can a familiar or animal companion.
  • Toon Durability (Ex): Toons are shockingly durable. They gain Why Won't You Die as a bonus feat, and treat damage from environmental sources (such as falling damage, or a trap) as non-lethal damage. In the case of falling damage or being crushed (such as from the dragon Crush ability), the toon must make a Fortitude save equal to the damage they took or be rendered flattened. A flattened toon is treated as prone, except they can move at half speed and they remain flattened for 1 round per die of the damage they took (minimum 1 round). They can inflate themselves, and thus "stand up from prone", as a full round action which provokes attacks of opportunity.
  • Skills: Toons receive a +2 racial bonus on Escape Artist and Perform (Comedy) checks, and these are always class skills.
  • Automatic Languages: As their base race.
  • Bonus Languages: As their base race.
  • Favored Class: Bard
  • Level Adjustment: +0
  • Effective Character Level: 1

Ritual of Animation[edit]

The Ritual of Animation transforms a character into a living cartoon known as a toon.

Becoming a toon is a mysterious process which seems as obscure and as varied as achieving lichdom. Not many undergo the process and each process is different, but a few underlying themes seem to be part of it. The creature being changed must have a sense of humor, for it has been found that the dour and humorless never complete the transformation and are simply left covered in ink. When the rite begins, the soon to be toon draws the image of themselves with rare magical inks and paints, and places this icon above a pool of similar ink. Then, they must undergo the movie marathon of 72 hours of cartoons, and must spend three full days watching cartoons while eating and drinking nothing but the holy snack foods and the blessed soda. Upon the end of the ritual, tired and pleased, they must lay in the pool of ink and the drawn image of their cartoon self is lowered over it like the lid of a coffin. Contained inside ink, their biological needs should be suspended and they fall into a stasis. Those that fail often begin suffocating in ink at this point.

The coffin remains closed until the morning of Saturday (it is not known the significance of this day), and upon the rising of the sun the self-made coffin opens, the ink gone and dried, and in the place of the former being is their cartoon self ready for saturday morning cartoon shenanigans.

Prerequisites: In order to be transformed as a suitable candidate, the creature must have an Intelligence score of at least 3. Having a sense of humor also appears to be a requirement, though it is one quite subjective.

Benefit: A toon loses many of her original racial traits and gains the racial traits of the toon race (see above).

You retain your subtypes and still count as a member of your original race. You retain any racial hit die and LA, and ability modifiers. You retain your base speed and any movement modes, but lose aspects which augment your speeds such as the dwarven ability to move in heavy armor. You retain your original size and languages.

You lose all other racial traits of your original race, including bonus feats, skill bonuses, attack bonuses, save bonuses, spell-like abilities, and so forth. If you lose a feat or skill points, you are able to choose where you lose them and re-select as appropriate.

Time: The Ritual of Animation requires 72 hours of watching cartoons, and an arbitrary time spent in ink until Saturday morning arrives. If the ceremony is interrupted, the prospective toon must start the rite from the beginning.

Cost: The magical ink crafted by the prospective toon costs 100 gp to create, and a DC 15 Craft (drawing) or similar check.
