The Makhaira is similar to a short sword in lenght, since it typically features a double-edged blade and a cruciform hilt; however, as the name suggests, the Broadsword has a wider and heavier blade (it weights almost as much as a longsword) wich enhances the cutting capacity of the weapon over the thrusting attitude. For that reason, its blade has edges running parallel most of the sword lenght, except for the tip, and even the tip of the sword is broader and more spatulate than the tip of a short sword.

The makhaira has a single-edged blade that pitches forward towards the point, the edge being concave near the hilt, but convex near the point. This shape distributes the weight in such a way that the makhaira is capable of delivering a blow with the momentum of an axe, while maintaining the longer cutting edge of a sword and some facility to execute a thrust. The grip is typically hook-shaped, the end often stylized in the shape of a horse or a bird. There is often a thin chain connecting the hooked butt with the hilt. Although usually a single-edged weapon, double-edged makhairas have been found.

The broad shortsword  is often used by infantry soldiers, usually in conjunction with a shield, to deliver powerful blows and massacre enemies.

A character without the Martial Weapon Proficiency feat can use a broadsword two-handed as a martial weapon, or one-handed with a penalty of -2.

A broad shortsword counts as a short sword or as longsword (but not as these two last weapons together) (but not as these two last weapons together) for the purpose of any of the following feats: Greater Weapon Focus, Greater Weapon Specialization, Improved Critical, Weapon Focus, and Weapon Specialization: if a character has any of these feats both on the short sword and on the longsword, the bonuses of the feats from the two last weapons don't stack within the broad shortsword.

1. See Damage Increases by Size to calculate the damage for a weapon larger than Medium or smaller than Small.
2. Weight figures are for Medium weapons. A Small weapon weighs half as much, and a Large weapon weighs twice as much.
3. When two types are given, the weapon is both types if the entry specifies "and", either type (player's choice at time of attack) if the entry specifies "or", or each end of the double weapon is a different type if the entry specifies "/".
4. The hp value given is for Medium armor, weapons, and shields. Divide by 2 for each size category of the item smaller than Medium, or multiply it by 2 for each size category larger than Medium.
