Nagara
“ | Halt, human. Do not delve further, these caves are not for the living. | ” |
—Patanjali Loka, Guardian of the Money Pit |
In ancient times it is said there was a war between two gods and their followers. One was a bird god of wind and violence who turned their followers into winged demons, and the other was a snake god of water and the afterlife, who transformed his followers into half man half serpents to do battle with their enemy. So began a great war, and when the conflict finally reached its end the survivors would pass into myth and legend. Yet these powerful divine beings seem to have reproduced, and now their less powerful kin roam the earth as human-snake people known as the Nagara.
Description
Nagara are giant snakes with human torsos where their head might be, as unto a centaur is to a horse. Many believe them to be related to nagas somehow, and not all buy their origins as divinely augmented warriors of a long forgotten religious conflict. Their snake bodies can come in a myriad of shapes, sizes, and colors while their upper halves hold humanoid proportions and colorations. Their eyes are serpentine, and they have sharp incisors and often longer than expected tongues. No trace of their former divinity seems to remain, though many would still claim it as their heritage.
If stretched out many nagara would extend 10 to 15 ft long, but their poise and the nature of their locomotion effectively makes them only 5 to 7 ft tall in practice. Thus they are still considered medium creatures. They tend to dress decoratively, as their ophidian features leave little to gawk at.

Nagara Psychology
Nagara often come off as stately, stern, or bearing a quiet pride and arrogance. Because of their belief in their divine origins, some believe that makes them more important than most. Those that hold the old traditions place great importance in holding the relics and ruins of one's past. It is common to find them as guardians of religions treasures, shrine maidens and priests, or protectors of places once of great importance. Some may find them stuffy.
They see flying creatures with some concern, as the memory of an ancient battle between serpent and avian runs deep in their blood.
Territories
Nagara often come from the ancient realms rich in culture and history, for it is this ancient history they tie themselves to. Sometimes they control these territories, but they rarely seek the limited and temporal rush of political power in favor for actual power behind the scenes, and so they often are blended into other cultures as a result.
Nagara Adventurers
While many nagara are stuck guarding places of interest, not only do the youth sometimes rebel, even those that follow the old ways will find themselves on an adventure in pursuit of stolen artifacts, or even investigating the idea of a historical piece long missing and soon to be found.
