Warlocks may gain access to special invocations, from which to choose from, if they pledge allegiance to one particular eldritch patron.
A warlock may have only such patron at any given time. Each patron confers four special invocations to choose, which would be normally unavailable to a warlock. You are not obliged to learn them, but why choose a patron then?
