You must know the target of the spell, or at least have a accurate enough description of them as well as know the name they used in life. If the soul was trapped it is freed with an opposed caster level check made against the effect which trapped it. If the soul was destroyed, a gem of raw soul-matter is needed and it is restore, immediately moving into the appropriate afterlife. After this point the creature may be restored from the dead as normal.
