Gigasporium Disease

Those infected become enlarged and bulky, and sometimes experience red spotting around their forehead. The size enlargement is useful at first, but if left untreated it quickly becomes too much for the body to bear and the wearer will soon collapse. Infected creatures eventually begin to spore, creating the growth of new gigasporium carrying mushrooms in the areas they visit.

Gigasporium Disease
Infection: Ingested or Inhaled
DC: 15
Incubation : 1 day
Damage : Enlargement (see text); Burden (see text), 1d4 Dex damage/day; Stupor (see text)
Effect: Upon first showing symptoms, the host will become biologically unstable. At a random point they will become nauseous for 1d4 rounds and at the end of the nausea abruptly become one size larger as per enlarge person (even if the host is not humanoid). Unlike the spell, items are not resized. Non-magical gear rips, while magical outfits and items resize. Weapons, magical or not, do not change size. The effect lasts until the host drops below 50% of their maximum hp, in which case they return to normal size. If they are healed, they are subject to the nausea and transformation again within 1 hour of being restored. Once infected, the disease cannot be removed without a Heal check of DC 20, or a remove disease spell.

Some may be tempted to be infected by this disease for this dubious benefit, but it becomes more difficult if they fail another Fortitude save while infected as they move onto Stage 2.

In stage 2 of the disease, the host is afflicted by the effects of the burden spell, and they take 1d4 points of Dexterity damage every day they fail the Fortitude save. A successful save negates the damage, but not the effect of burden. Only by succeeding on two consecutive saving throws can they return to stage 1 of the disease. If the host is reduced to 0 Dexterity for any reason in stage 2, they progress to stage 3.

Stage 3 wracks of the body with fungal growths. The host enters a dreamlike stupor, mindless and helpless as they are covered in a growing pile of mushrooms that rapidly spread a 20 ft radius cloud of disease in the area. They can only hallucinate vividly, slowly starving to death if unable to get help. As before, two successful saves drops them to stage 2 with a Dex score of 1.

The disease is infectious if the mushrooms are eaten, and usually only inhaled if the mushrooms are destroyed or are in sporing season.

Curing: remove disease.

Price: 750 gp.
