Hot Ice
In the depths of the elemental plane of fire lays crystaline rocks which at first glance almost look like red colored ice, but is actually a crimson transparent crystal named hot ice. Hot ice radiates heat constantly, and has a very long life. It can release a great deal of heat, slowly turning a murky brown haze as it eventually grows cooler and cooler to meet the surrounding temperatures. This is because they function like batteries, absorbing the heat of their elemental plane surroundings for years before being brought to colder climates. When the crystal turns brown, it is "burned out". However they are usually recycled, returning to the elemental plane of fire, or being sent to the paraelemental plane of ice to become coldstone.
While hot ices which generate only a little heating useful for most utilitarian affairs are safe, there are greater hot ices which generate larger abounts of heat. Besides possibly incuring fire damage on touching them, they generate noticable amounts of magical radiation which they output. Magical radiation has been known to generate bad effects, from biological mutations and cancers to wild magic zones, and so such high powered hot ice is rarely used. They primarly function to heat something major, such as performing the same function as uranium in a nuclear reactor, and are shielded off from contact.
Hot ice is a poor material to shape into weapons and armor, it's primary use is in the cooking and steam engines. Hot ice goes for about 50g per pound.
