What I really want to do here is make a creature that players have no real hope of defeating head-on. It towers over human-sized creatures, which don't even reach its knees. An ultralisk just will not concievably fall to blades and arrows or even to conventional battle spells. It has been evolved to anihilate heavily armored enemies and dismantle fortifications. Adventurers should only engage an ultralisk as part of a much larger force, attempting to turn the tide of battle largely through skill challenges. They may attempt to use natural features of the battlefield, cunning traps, or siege weapons to wear it down, for example.
[[File:Nightmare from creativeuncut.jpg|thumb|right|Extensive mutations can follow seemingly random patterns.]]

Those who fall into the clutches of the zerg swarm are horribly corrupted and mutated according to the whims of their new masters. Most emerge from their morphing chrysalis looking more alien than anything else, but a few are left with few external indications of their new alegiance... to be used as agents to infiltrate their original society and bring it down from within.
+
==Ultralisk==
 +
The ultralisk is stands at the pinnacle of zerg evolution with regard to land-bound warfare. It is comparable to a mobile fortress; a colossal armor-plated mammoth sporting 4 enormous, bladed arms. Ultralisks are noted for their devastating Kaiser blade attacks, bringing pairs of their arms together in a deadly scissor motion which, as often as not, leaves their targets in pieces while simultaneously slicing at anything else nearby. They are so massive that nothing can slow or hold an ultralisk in place; every step they take threatens to grind lesser foes into the dust.

Oftentimes, infested will develop freakish and bestial features, such as overlarge fangs and claws. They can mutate in such a way as to functionally fuse with whatever weapons and armour they had at the time, their bodies warping to integrating armour into their mass directly and enelope the hilts of weapons (especially magical ones). It is not uncommon for them to sprout spines and tentacles seemingly at random, emerging from gaps in their armour or piercing it as they grow.
+
Behind its burning eyes, the ultralisk's mind is a thing of seething chaos locked in permanent battle frenzy. Despite its enormous size, it seems to notice every opening and opportunity that presents itself on the battlefield. All attempts to influence its mind prove fruitless and it oftentimes shakes off trauma that should have left it senseless. The ultralisk is even able to project this overwhelming chaos with its gaze and roar.

There may be an order to the chaos, however, as many infested show a striking resemblance to certain existing zerg strains. This is believed to be a result of some genetic affinity for that aspect of the swarms genome. This often coincides with the victim's predisposition prior to infestation, as those who favoured melee combat more often have an affinity for zergling or ultralisk aspects, whereas those who preferred ranged combat tend to align with hydralisk aspects.
+
''Note:'' If its powers seem a bit ridiculous, they most likely are. I'm just throwing ideas out there at the moment. I'm really envisioning a monster that is impossible to defeat by conventional means. Defeating it would simply require an application of force that no blade, arrow, or battle spell is capable of. Requisition all siege weapons in the region, drop a few towers over its head, call down meteors through ritual magic; the response should be proportionate to the size of the threat. Skill challenges to deal meaningful damage to the ultralisk would be perfectly welcome.

===Infested Rabble Tactics===

Rabble are freshly infested, just beginnig to maifest their first mutations and still weakened from the horrifying zerg virus. As such they are rather vulnerable, but even so, their mutations grant them deadly claws and thick, leathery skin. Their enhanced regenerative ability may keep some in the fight a little longer. They attack only in defense of thier brood, preferring to work in pairs and occasionally taking up their formerly favoured weapons, if available.

The first step in an often painful process of transformation, slashers develop some of the more universal zerg features. Their toes lengthen, giving them the long strides of a digitigrade gait. Their eyes become the disconcerting orange and black, even as their hides harden into a bizare scaly exoskeleton.  Their fingers develop into long, razor sharp talons that fan out like a bat's wing (lacking its membrane) and they grow needle-like teeth, occasionally complimented by a pair of fanged mandibles.

The Goal[edit]

What I really want to do here is make a creature that players have no real hope of defeating head-on. It towers over human-sized creatures, which don't even reach its knees. An ultralisk just will not concievably fall to blades and arrows or even to conventional battle spells. It has been evolved to anihilate heavily armored enemies and dismantle fortifications. Adventurers should only engage an ultralisk as part of a much larger force, attempting to turn the tide of battle largely through skill challenges. They may attempt to use natural features of the battlefield, cunning traps, or siege weapons to wear it down, for example.

Ultralisk[edit]

Note: If its powers seem a bit ridiculous, they most likely are.
