Impatient Prodigy[edit]

<-general description->.

Making an Impatient Prodigy[edit]

Magical prodigies find that magic comes very easily and without tiring. Their magical abilities are usable without preparation or rest. Unfortunately, they frequently lack the dedication to see their magical attempts through to completion. Devoted spellcasters such as clerics and especially wizards find adventuring with prodigies to be tiresome at best.

Abilities: Intelligence drives the impatient prodigy. Other abilities flourish in impatient prodigies that would rather be doing something else, but cannot escape their knack for magic.

Races: Most impatient prodigies are impetuous humans, halflings, dwarves that find aging to be too slow, and half-orcs with magical talent but no patience for book learning.

Class Features[edit]

All of the following are class features of the impatient prodigy:

Weapon and Armor Proficiency: A prodigy's talents are often limited to a single domain. An impatient prodigy is proficient with simple weapons and light armor, but not with any shields. An impatient prodigy suffers from arcane spell failure when casting spells in armor or while wielding shields.

Spells: Impatient prodigies cast spells from the impatient prodigy spell list, which consists of every wizard spell with a casting time of no more than one round and a duration measured in rounds and that doesn't require concentration. The difficulty class for saving throws vs an impatient prodigy's spells is 10 + the spell's level + the impatient prodigy's intelligence modifier. Intelligence determines the highest level spell an impatient prodigy may cast. Impatient prodigies choose their spells from the following list:

0— Daze, Ghost Sound, Touch of Fatigue

1st— Animate Rope, Cause Fear, Grease, Hypnotism, Summon Monster I, True Strike

2nd— Daze Monster, Flaming Sphere, Ghoul Touch, Glitterdust, Melf's Acid Arrow, Pyrotechnics, Scare, Summon Monster II, Tasha's Hideous Laughter

3rd— Blink, Displacement, Halt Undead, Haste, Hold Person, Sleet Storm, Slow, Stinking Cloud, Summon Monster III, Wind Wall

4th— Confusion, Evard's Black Tentacles, Fear, Fire Shield, Lesser Globe of Invulnerability, Ice Storm, Summon Monster IV

5th— Bigby's Interposing Hand, Hold Monster, Mordenkainen's Faithful Hound, Summon Monster V

6th— Acid Fog, Analyze Dweomer, Bigby's Forceful Hand, Eyebite, Globe of Invulnerability, Repulsion, Summon Monster VI, Tenser's Transformation

7th— Bigby's Grasping Hand, Ethereal Jaunt, Mass Hold Person, Mordenkainen's Sword, Project Image, Reverse Gravity, Summon Monster VII

8th— Bigby's Clenched Fist, Incendiary Cloud, Otto's Irresistible Dance, Summon Monster VIII

9th— Bigby's Crushing Hand, Mass Hold Monster, Summon Monster IX

Restless Magus: Never having learned discipline, the impatient prodigy's spells fail after a single round. Even if he acquires spells from some other source, an impatient prodigy can never use his spell slots to cast spells that do not have a duration of at least one round, and every spell cast from one of these slots fails after one round.

Spontaneous Metamagic: An impatient prodigy may spontaneously apply metamagical feats to spells without increasing the time required to cast them.

Hobby: An impatient prodigy usually prefers some distraction to magical study and has a hobby. Choose two skills, those skills become class skills for the impatient prodigy.

Cheaper Metamagic: Beginning at 4th level, an impatient prodigy may cast metamagically enhanced spells without requiring higher spell slots. The total slot adjustment for a metamagically enhanced impatient prodigy spell is reduced by 1 at 4th level, and by an additional 1 at levels 8, 12, 16, and 20.

Ex-Impatient Prodigies[edit]

An impatient prodigy that gains a level in a prepared arcane spellcasting class cannot gain further levels of impatient prodigy. Characters with levels of prepared arcane spellcasting classes cannot gain levels in the impatient prodigy class.
