The warding spike is a cold iron [[SRD:Adventuring Gear|piton]] with a unique effect.  When embedded into a surface, it protects a ''[[Warding Shell (3.5e Spell)|warding shell]]'' effect out to 20 feet, centered on the piton.  The piton can be embedded by hand in any surface with a hardness of 5 or less, and a hardness of 10 or less with a hammer.  Either method is a move action which provokes attacks of opportunity.

The warding spike can project its ''warding shell'' effect for up to 12 minutes per day.  The duration of the effect need not be consecutive rounds (minimum 1 minute).  It only functions when in a surface, though if the object is mobile the ''warding shell'' effect is mobile as well.

Warding spikes are often used to make a defensive barrier to prevent enemy spellcasters from attacking troops in war situations.
