The first part of this spell involves the creation of a magical barrier around the caster and any allies within Close range (to a maximum of one per level of the caster). This is not an area spell and wards each character separately. In no way does the barrier impede a target from acting, but it does absorb any damage they take for the following round. In addition, the target becomes immune to any spell, spell-like ability or supernatural ability that targets them with a harmful effect; any such effects that do not deal damage are instead converted into 5 points of absorbed damage per caster level (or per point of Challenge Rating if caster level does not apply) of the source. Death effects and other effects that would kill the target instantly on a failed save instead count as 10 points of absorbed damage per CR or CL.

As a swift action useable on the turn after you cast this spell, you may redirect all the damage absorbed by this spell into a wave of magical energy that punishes attackers. You may choose to either deal to each creature the damage for which they are personally accountable or to concentrate the damage fully onto a single target. A Fortitude save halves the damage dealt.
