Any foe who attacks you with a natural weapon, unarmed attack or non-reach melee weapon takes 1d4 points of Force damage, plus 1 per point of Deflection bonus your shield grants. If you possess the Energy-Resistant Shield feat, the damage can instead be of whatever type your shield protects against; And the base damage increases from 1d4 to 1d6. If your shield protects against multiple types of energy, the damage does not increase, but you may divide the damage up among the types as you please.
